Jackson Urges State Lands Commission To Terminate Rincon Island Oil and Gas Leases

August 09, 2016

SACRAMENTO – Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) has sent a letter to the State Lands Commission, urging them to terminate the leases held by an oil company with old and poorly maintained wells and equipment on Rincon Island in Ventura County.

In the letter, Jackson cites the lack of “meaningful progress” made by the Rincon Island Limited Partnership since state regulators with the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources discovered numerous idle wells and poorly maintained equipment on the island and ordered repairs and testing.

“Without responsible maintenance of these facilities on Rincon Island, we face the devastating risk of another oil spill, with potentially disastrous consequences to our environment and public health, “ said Jackson. “Despite significant warnings and lead time, Rincon Island Limited Partnership has failed to get its act together and I urge the Commission to vote to terminate its leases.”

A copy of the letter is attached. The California State Lands Commission meets tomorrow at 11 a.m. in San Pedro.
