Get Covered, California!
Tuesday marked the beginning of open enrollment for health insurance available under the Affordable Care Act. As your representative in the State Senate, I wanted to make sure I passed along the information and resources you might need to apply for health coverage for you, your family, or your business.
In 2010, the federal government approved a law - the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - to increase the number of Americans with health insurance and cut the cost of health care. Open enrollment runs until March 31, 2014 and health insurance coverage can begin as soon as Jan. 1, 2014.
The law provides financial assistance to help individuals and small businesses pay for health insurance. Those who already have affordable health insurance don't need to take any action, unless they lose their coverage for certain reasons, such as the loss of a job.
California set up Covered California as its online marketplace for health coverage. California also decided to expand its Medi-Cal program, and Covered California is the place to go to find out if you're eligible for Medi-Cal or subsidies to purchase private health insurance. Even if you're not eligible for federal subsidies, if you're a legal California resident, you can purchase health coverage through Covered California. By April 1, 2014, Covered California expects to enroll over half a million subsidy-eligible Californians.

The Covered California mission is to increase the number of Californians with health insurance, improve the quality of health care, reduce health care coverage costs and make sure California's diverse population has equal access to quality health care. Californians will have the ability to choose the health plan that offers the best services at the greatest value to themselves and their families. Most importantly, health insurance can no longer be dropped or denied because of a pre-existing medical condition.
