VC Star: State Senate Leader Seeks $175 Million for Mental Health Services

Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, who joined Steinberg at a Wednesday news conference, said the rampage in Isla Vista tragically demonstrated existing shortcomings.

“His mental illness was right out there on YouTube, right out there on Facebook,” she said, speaking of Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old who killed six and injured 13. “There were so many potential moments when this behavior could have, and perhaps should have been addressed.”

Jackson noted that seven officers visited Elliot after his mother contacted police to advise them of her concerns about his mental state. Those officers, she said, “went out to his home without the full panoply of resources. Can we do better? We must do better.”
