Statement: Jackson on Today's Supreme Court Rulings

June 26, 2013

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decisions on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act:

“Today is a day for the history books and a day for celebration. We celebrate these Supreme Court decisions for what they are: victories in the fight for marriage equality in California and the nation and the basic civil rights of thousands of couples who have long hoped to pledge their love and commitment to each other with the full rights and benefits that marriage confers. Today's historic Supreme Court decisions are the result of decades of work by the LGBT community and those who share that commitment to equal rights and equal dignity. I look forward to loving couples who seek to memorialize that love in marriage seeing their rights reinstated immediately. And I look forward to a day that is now closer in sight than it has ever been – the day when discrimination in any form will be determined to be unacceptable and unconstitutional. Let the wedding bells ring with equality and justice for all!”

Jackson represents the 19th Senate district, which includes all of Santa Barbara County and western Ventura County.
