Lompoc Record: Jackson Gets After-School Recognition Program Approved

September 19, 2014

When Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill from state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, earlier this week, he shone a spotlight on healthy eating and physical activity in after-school programs around the state.

Jackson pushed Senate Bill 949 to create the voluntary Distinguished After School Health Recognition Program. Under the DASH program, new standards would be proposed for physical activity, "screen time" and serving fruits and vegetable during organized after-school activities.

Programs that adopt these standards will get a DASH certification. Parents and guardians can find a list of certified programs on the State Department of Education's website and can see certifications displayed onsite as well.
