VC Star: Senate panel supports bill to aid affordable-housing projects facing back taxes

April 24, 2014

SACRAMENTO — Following emotional testimony from former Santa Paula Mayor Fred Robinson, who said his schizophrenic son could lose a vital housing arrangement, a state Senate committee on Thursday approved a bill that would save that affordable-housing project from the threat of bankruptcy.

The measure, Senate Bill 1203, was authored by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, in response to a decision last year by Ventura County Assessor Dan Goodwin. He sought to collect back taxes from four nonprofit affordable-housing projects he asserted did not qualify for the property-tax exemption afforded them by state law.
