Senator Jackson and CHP to Hold Press Conferences Monday Urging Safe Driving Over the New Year's Holiday

VENTURA – State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) and the California Highway Patrol will hold press conferences on Monday in Ventura and Santa Maria to urge motorists to drive safely, designate a non-drinking driver, and obey traffic laws over the New Year’s holiday.

“As we ring in the New Year with family and friends, let’s make safety a top priority,” said Jackson, who represents the 19th Senate district, which includes Santa Barbara County and portions of Ventura County. “Designate a driver who isn’t drinking. Put away distractions like cell phones and wear your seat beats. Let’s start the new year right by working together to keep preventable tragedies from happening.”

The CHP’s maximum enforcement period will run from 6 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012 and continue to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.  Last year during the New Year’s holiday weekend, 25 people were killed in collisions in California.  In addition, 1,270 people were arrested by the CHP on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, the agency said.

“Now is the time of year when celebrations increase, as well as the chance of encountering an impaired driver,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.  “One way to keep everyone safe, and reduce the odds of spending the holiday in jail, is to designate a non-drinking driver in advance.  Your life may depend on it.”
